New York, Wednesday FT
A lot of things had happened. An album, write-ups in some prominent music magazines, the skyrocketing popularity of Envy's blog, a gig at Gideon Graves' club in New York...
And now, it was time to head back to Toronto. The Clash at Demonhead had a couple of shows lined up, and Todd had... business to attend to in the city, too. And the thing was, Envy had some business to take care of beforehand.
Which was to make a phone call.
So she did. Picked a number she hadn't had any reason to call for a long while now. Waited until a familiar voice picked up.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Scott." An uncomfortable, shocked silence at the other end. "It's me."
"It's... It's you."
"Hi."
"Envy Adams."
"Hi."
Another long pause. "Hi."
"It's been a long time."
"Yeah."
It was probably wrong to feel a slight elation at the way Scott managed to somehoe sound like a deer in headlights. "A year, I think?" she asked, all too sweetly.
"Approximately."
"How are you?"
"Right now?"
"Sure."
"Not good. I'm not doing so good right now."
"That sucks."
"Well, it's obviously your fault."
It was definitely wrong to feel a strange little thrill at that. "Well, duh."
"Well... Yeah."
"How's life? Where are you living now?"
"It's, um, you take the Ossington bus –"
"And you're still living with Wallace?"
"Yeah. I mean, we share a bed. It's totally hot."
"Uh-huh. How's your love life? Still breaking hearts?"
"What? No! Stop. I've been – it's been different. You have no idea."
She gave a quiet snort. "Probably not. Do you have a girlfriend? Should I be jealous?"
"Yes. Yes, you should. I have a totally awesome American ninja girlfriend."
...
Hold on.
"What?" Scott asked.
Oh, like Envy was going to explain. "What's her name?"
"I'm not telling you that!"
"Pleeeease?"
"It's... it's Ramona Flowers."
"Oh."
Oh.
It looked like Envy and Todd's various businesses in Toronto were a little more tangled up together than previously thought. Or a lot more. Like, a ton. Things were going to get interesting.
Poor Scott had no idea. "Oh? What, you know her or something?"
"Uh... No."
"It sounded like you know her."
"I doubt that very much."
"Well... She's my girlfriend."
Envy paused again. Had half a thought of letting Scott know about the things she already did.
"What?"
She wasn't going to tell him a damn thing. "I'm jealous."
"You're jealous?"
"I'm allowed."
"You left me! For... for that cocky pretty boy!"
She smirked, to herself. "You've never even seen him."
"Yeah, I know. You left me for a guy I've never even seen."
"Well... Maybe you'll see him soon."
"Oh, right. So what is this? Why are you calling, Envy?"
Sigh. Feigned boredom. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means are you evil, or are you just being nice?"
"What, like do I have ulterior motives or something? Am I a user?"
"You're such a user. It's not like I have to ask."
"Okay, I'm kind of a user." You simply didn't spend that much time around Peter Wiggin before his more in touch with humanity days and not pick up a thing or two. "We're playing a few shows at Lee's Palace this weekend, and we're getting some local bands to open –"
"Yeah?"
"– and this one opening band for Sunday go in a big fight and dropped out –"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, the lead guitarist and bass player were dating and they broke up and everything kind of crumbled –"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, and I think their drummer is in like a coma –"
"Yeah, and?"
"And I was hoping your band could play."
"Oh."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Oh."
"Come on," she said, the eyebrow raise practically audible. "This is supposed to be a big deal."
"I'm a pity case."
"Give me a break. You and Stephen have a new band, right? Sex Bomb or something, right?"
"Sex Bob-Omb."
"Right. So look, I'm putting you guys on the guest list for Friday, okay? So come see us and we'll talk afterwards, okay?"
"... Okay."
"It's been nice chatting with you."
"Uh-huh."
"I'm glad we had this little talk."
"Sure."
