Montreal, Canada, Friday Afternoon

Montreal was quiet and normal. It had been, anyway, after the squirrels had left yesterday. Natalie liked that. Things were all as usual, and she was enjoying that. She was intending to stay for a while yet, too. Her father had insisted on a book shop tour tomorrow, and her mother a proper family dinner.

Both parents were at work now, though, so Natalie had the house to herself. Not that you could tell from the way that she was acting, since she was curled up in the arm chair in her room, as usual. Music was playing on the stereo, and her computer was open on the desk, as it tended to be. And she had a book in her lap, one for her French Lit class. It was like she'd never moved away.

Except she had a phone in her hand, and was picking Sam's number. That was definitely a change. And not a bad one.

"It takes a lot to intimidate me," Sam noted though Natalie had done it before. "Should I be worried?"

"Probably not," Natalie said, shrugging again. "Just know that she's likely to ask a lot of questions. As mothers do."

Well, his mother hadn't done it to her, much, but anyway.

"Despite the fact that I might get questioned, I still think I'd like to come, Sam decided. "Questions don't bother me unless they're about certain things."

"She won't ask you anything about necromancy," Natalie promised. "Or anything else she doesn't know about. She might be perceptive, but not quite to that extent."

[necroslacker]

"Well, then I think we'll be okay," Sam said, nodding. "Never been to Montreal and it's been ages since I met anyone's parents save for my own."

[whenshewasnice]

"And it's a couple of months away, so you'll have time to panic beforehand, and then calm down again," Natalie noted. "With our track record, we'll probably manage to half-cancel it a time or two before that."

"You can put me down for a tentative yes, at least," Sam told her. "And tell your parents to go easy on me. I'm fragile."

"I shouldn't lie to my parents like that," she quipped. "I don't think you're fragile."

[necroslacker]

"Hey, I'm totally fragile!" Sam exclaimed. "My inferior girlfriend left a few minutes ago and I was heartbroken!"

"Sorry, I didn't hear you sobbing or anything," Natalie retorted, snickering a bit. "So, I think you're sturdier than you're claiming to be."

"It was internal sobbing," Sam noted. "I was crying internally. It was a sad thing. You should be comforting me."

[whenshewasnice]

"I think this is just about you missing me," Natalie decided, "and making up a fake inferior girlfriend so that I'd be nice to you."

"You saying you wouldn't be nice to me without a fake inferior girlfriend?" Sam wondered.

[whenshewasnice]

"No, I'm saying you think that," Natalie pointed out. "This fake girlfriend popped up before I had a chance to be nice about your pain."

"And if I didn't have a fake girlfriend, would you have been nice?" Sam wondered.

[whenshewasnice]

"Well," she drawled, "the fake girlfriend doesn't particularly inspire me to be nicer?"

As she was possessive. A little.

"What if I said there was no fake girlfriend?" Because she'd totally thought there was, of course. "Just you."

[whenshewasnice]

"I think the word 'fake' there kind of implied that," Natalie remarked. "But good. I didn't sign up for an open relationship."

[necroslacker]

"What'd you sign up for, hmm?" Sam asked quietly.

[whenshewasnice]

"A monogamous one," Natalie replied, a touch more softly. "Just you and me. Just us. No extras."

No random fake inferior girlfriends.

"That's a good thing to sign up for."

He sighed quietly.

"If I ask for a simple favor, will you keep an open mind before not doing it? It's not bad, I promise. Just something I...kinda wanna hear."

Natalie had to raise an eyebrow at that. Not in a bad way, though: just curious.

"Way to make a girl suspicious, Samhain," she said. "What is it?"

"Just tell me you love me."

That was it.

"In English."

He did notice that she tended to use other languages with that phrase.

Natalie had almost guessed that. It was something she did half on purpose, after all, the language switch. Even if she'd never really bothered to think on why that was.

"Oh." She exhaled something that had faint traces of a laugh. "I love you."

See, she could say it in English too.

"Thank you."

See, he had easy requests sometimes.

"I love you too. I just wanted to hear it today. I do miss you."
