Room 223, Monday Afternoon

Natalie had survived her first Fandom High Parents Weekend. It really wasn't much of an accomplishment when she hadn't had any guests of her own, but whatever. She gathered it was still some kind of a landmark, even if she'd spent the majority of it just reading and watching stuff on her own. She just liked it better that way.

And hey, she'd still managed to get what she supposed was a variation of the 'if you hurt him' speech from Sam's friends, so that was something.

But now it was Monday, and it was time to get back into gear. And for Natalie, this meant sitting on her bed with a cup of coffee, studying German from the book in front of her.

She led such an exciting life.

"Well, thanks," he said and shook his head at that one because he'd sooner throw himself out than get kicked out. "Got plans for what you're gonna do instead since I'm here and all?"

"We're back to that question again, eh?" Unsurprising, really. It was only logical. "I could convince you to try and take a nap?"

Who even knew if that was serious or not.

"I don't really need convincing," Sam assured her, shrugging a shoulder. "I know I need to sleep. It's actually sleeping that's the problem. I don't sleep well."

He'd said that before, he knew, and he was sorry for repeating himself. "I'm sure you're very convincing though. Give a normal person one look and they'll fall asleep wherever they are."

"That sounds more like I'm just that boring," she noted, going for a slightly different topic, there. That didn't mean she was going to stop wondering about his sleep problems, just that she wasn't prodding.

"Any other bright ideas?"

[necroslacker]

"You're not boring," Sam assured her, shaking his head, "but no, no real bright ideas. I could let you get back to your German if that's something you'd want to do. I know your first love is books and all."

"It's not." Natalie liked her random pieces of honesty, and that was one of those. Idly dropped into conversation before moving right along.

She nodded. "I think I still want you to stay. We can talk or make out or whatever."

Sam picked up on the fact that she'd admitted that books weren't her first love. He wondered if that meant that maybe music was. But, he didn't ask.

"I can stay," he decided, nodding, "and we can either of those, yeah. Talking, making out, crossword puzzles, whatever. I'm cool with that."

Natalie looked a little amused. "Even the crossword puzzles?" She didn't have crossowrd puzzles, in fcat she didn't even like crossword puzzles all that much, but she almost wished she'd had some just to make him live by his words. "Wow."

"Hey, just remember I never said I was any good at them," Sam pointed out because it was an important detail. "Frank used to do them sometimes. Said it stimulated his intelligence or something. I can maybe manage to get one or two out of like sixty. But, I try hard!"

"A for effort," Natalie drawled, finally pulling away from him but reaching for his hand. "I don't have any crossword puzzles, anyway."

[necroslacker]

"Yeah, that's me, always giving an effort even when I know it's gonna be futile," he remarked, lacing his fingers with hers and pushing away from the door. "But, since you don't have crossword puzzles, we can ignore my lack of intelligence when it comes to coming up with words from impossible clues. Better for my ego."

[whenshewasnice]

"I'll keep that in mind for future reference," Natalie drawled. You know, for whenever she'd find herself in need of tools for chipping at his ego, or something. Whatever.

She tugged him easily towards her bed. "Who says just talking can't make you feel intellectually inadequate?"

[necroslacker]

"I might at least be able to fake it when it comes to talking," Sam said, letting himself be tugged. "Words can come out of my mouth, agreements, questions all without knowing what the hell is being discussed. I'm sure I'm not the only one who does that."

[whenshewasnice]

"Yes but does it make you feel intelligent?" she wondered, as the back of her legs met the edge of the bed. "Or just clever? Guess clever works too."

[necroslacker]

"It makes me feel like a contributing participant in the conversation," Sam replied, shrugging a shoulder. "I never said I had to feel intelligent or clever. Just like I'm trying to make a contribution to the conversation. Wouldn't want the other person to feel like they were talking to a brick wall."

[whenshewasnice]

"No, I think the intellectual thing was where I was coming from. Originally." And he'd gotten her sidetracked but she didn't care. She let go of his hand to first take a seat on the edge of her bed, then push back a little. "Never mind."

[necroslacker]

"Never mind," Sam echoed, stopping when his knees hit the bed. He watched her get settled and almost looked a little shy about this. IT was different when it was her bed for some reason.

"Sorry, didn't mean to sidetrack you," Sam said, sounding a little apologetic. "I've got a knack for that."

"Not a lot of people do." Sidetrack her, she meant. Her particular knack was for focusing.

She flopped down onto her back, again resting one hand on her stomach, looking up at him. "Well?"

"Hmm?" Poor Sam had gotten a little sidetracked himself watching her get all comfortable. "Well what?"

"Well, are you just going to stand here?" Natalie clarified, a hint of amusement slipping through. "Am I supposed to be eye candy or something?"

[necroslacker]

"Oh. Yeah. Sorry," Sam said, shaking his head and dropping down onto the empty space she'd left him. He ended up on his back, one arm tucked behind his head.

So, he was there now. It wasn't so bad even. Kinda nice, in fact.

"Better," Natalie complimented him, if a little sarcastically as per usual. "See, my bed isn't going to devour you whole."

[necroslacker]

"I didn't think it was gonna devour me," Sam quipped, smiling at the ceiling for a second. "I just got a little distracted watching you get comfortable. So yeah, for a second, you were eye candy for me."

[whenshewasnice]

"Really." It wasn't a question, and it was dry, but maybe she was secretly pleased. Maybe. She rolled onto her side and propped her head up on one arm. "You got over it."

[necroslacker]

"You pulled my attention away so I wouldn't say I got over it so much as I turned my attention elsewhere," he said, smiling up at her. "You're still pretty and I'm still looking. It's just from a different angle now."
